Is it okay to switch formula milk when the baby is almost six months old?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my baby is now almost six months old. Currently, he is exclusively breastfed, but sometimes the breast milk is not enough. I have given him a German brand formula called Aptamil, but I don't feel very comfortable drinking it. I think after six months, he will definitely need to drink more formula. May I switch to a Holle formula? Will switching formula midway be harmful to the baby?

Doctor's answer:

From a nutritional perspective, it should be fine, because the nutrient composition of each formula is fixed, and it's impossible to achieve a perfectly tailored nutrient combination. Therefore, frequently switching formulas can be beneficial for your baby's balanced absorption of various nutrients. As for the diverse natural immune factors in breast milk, they have excellent effects on your baby's intelligence and growth and development. If there's no special reason, try to persist with breastfeeding for at least two years.
