What is the normal index of jaundice?

Patient's question:

I don't know what's going on, but my child has been misbehaving and crying non-stop lately. Even the hospital check-up didn't help. Could you please tell me what the normal range for jaundice is?

Doctor's answer:

In your case, it may be physiological jaundice. Physiological jaundice is mild when it appears pale yellow, limited to the face and neck, or may affect the trunk, with sclera also becoming yellowish. It usually subsides within 2 to 3 days and the skin color returns to normal by the 5th to 6th day. In severe cases, jaundice may initially affect the head and then spread to the limbs, covering the entire body. Vomiting and cerebrospinal fluid may also turn yellow, with the duration lasting more than a week. In some premature infants, it may persist for up to 4 weeks, with the stool still remaining yellow and no bilirubin in the urine. It is recommended to use blue light therapy, which can be effective.
