How to take Gentian and Coptis for newborn jaundice

Patient's question:

My baby is a premature child. I was very worried about the child's condition from the beginning. Recently, the child has appeared with this series of conditions, and I am also very worried, afraid that the child will get worse. How should newborns take Gentian Formula (Yin Zhi Huang)?

Doctor's answer:

In your case, it may be physiological jaundice. Physiological jaundice in mild cases appears pale yellow, limited to the face and neck, or may affect the trunk, and the sclera may also turn yellow. It usually subsides within 2 to 3 days and returns to normal skin color by the 5th to 6th day. In severe cases, jaundice similarly starts from the head and spreads to the feet, affecting the entire body. Vomiting and cerebrospinal fluid may also turn yellow, with the duration lasting more than a week. In some premature infants, it may persist for up to 4 weeks, with the stool still remaining yellow and no bilirubin in the urine. It is recommended to use blue light therapy, which can be effective.
