Features: An English-Chinese Common Medical Vocabulary was first published in 1976, followed by a revised and expanded edition in 1982. It was printed six times, with a total of 532,100 copies, ranking first among similar medical glossaries in China. This edition has undergone major revisions, featuring over 20,000 entries. The editing and selection of terms in this vocabulary employ unique methods and standards, striving for conciseness, practicality, and novelty. Readers are advised to first read the Instructions for Use to understand the special editing approach of this vocabulary, which will facilitate its smooth application.
After the publication of the revised and expanded second edition, we began preparing for the revision of the third edition in January 1984, inviting three distinguished medical authorities—Professor Wu Yingkai, Professor Huang Jiashi, and Professor Zeng Xianjiu—as consultants. Professor Zhao Shizhen served as the chief reviewer, with the author taking the role of the main editor. Supported by 32 experts and professors, we successfully completed the major revision of the third edition. Regrettably, at a critical stage of the revision, we lost our esteemed Professor Huang Jiashi, Professor Zeng Xianjiu, and Reviewer Zhao Shizhen. We express our profound sorrow in their memory! Professor Yu Bencheng also contributed an appendix titled Common Latin Microbiological Terms, which we will never forget. We dedicate this edition to them as a lasting tribute.
This edition adds over 5,000 new entries while removing over 4,000 from the second edition. Additionally, we have revised approximately 1,000 retained entries. The editing and selection of terms in this vocabulary employ unique methods and standards, striving for conciseness, practicality, and novelty. This edition includes new terms for oral medicine, psychiatry, basic medicine, electrocardiography, and veterinary medicine to meet the needs of various specialties. It also adds over 5,000 new entries, revises approximately 1,000 retained terms, and includes 12 appendices to enhance its knowledge content.
