Features: This series of books includes nearly a thousand world-famous literary classics that are renowned for their reputation, achievements, and profound influence. It is the largest, most carefully selected, innovative in perspective, and widest-ranging series of world literary classics in China to date. Compared to similar publications, this series has four advantages:
1. For the first time, it combines long-form masterpieces and short-story masterpieces. In addition to selecting over 70 long-form classics such as War and Peace, One Thousand and One Nights, and Les Misérables, it also pioneers the inclusion of works by O. Henry and Guy de Maupassant.
2. For the first time, it presents both classical and contemporary works simultaneously. It includes classical masterpieces like Les Misérables, The Three Musketeers, and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, as well as newly included contemporary works such as The Black Spring, Lolita, and The Gates of Youth.
3. For the first time, it collects and publishes politically controversial and erotic books that were considered forbidden in many countries. It almost comprehensively includes the top ten banned books recommended by The New York Times and the World Censorship Association. The authors range from D.H. Lawrence, the pioneer of erotic literature and one of the world's three great writers of banned books, to Henry Miller, whose works were banned for decades in the U.S. for their bold and explicit portrayal of sexuality; to Vladimir Nabokov, the leader of the Russian decadent movement, who was celebrated as one of the most influential novelists after World War II but criticized for writing "dirty novels" due to Lolita; to Marquis de Sade, the founder of French pornography, who was imprisoned eight times for his writings, served 30 years in prison, and was sentenced to death three times (though not executed); to Japanese writer Sadatami Hitcho and Spanish writer Mario Vargas Llosa, both famous for their works on lives and erotic literature. These banned books are written with raw and vulgar honesty, featuring explicit and shocking depictions of sexuality, candid confessions of personal, and works celebrated as "sensational bedtime stories," as well as avant-garde literature advocating sexual liberation. The selected works are presented in their original form, blending brilliance and filth—readers are advised to exercise discernment.
4. In addition to traditional world classics from Western countries such as the U.K., France, Russia, and the U.S., like A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, and Les Misérables by the great 19th-century realist Charles Dickens, and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by the Romanticist Victor Hugo, and the works of the great 19th-century Russian writer Leo Tolstoy like Anna Karenina and War and Peace, this series also for the first time includes classic literary works from other countries such as India's Rabindranath Tagore, Japan's Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Egypt's Tawfik Al-Hakim, and Peru-Spanish Mario Vargas Llosa.
Les Misérables is a masterpiece by the French giant Victor Hugo, who ranks alongside Balzac and Zola. Literary historians consider it one of the pioneers of nouveauroman and théatre en prose. Regardless of the past, present, or future, Les Misérables will forever remain a dazzling landscape in the hall of world literature with its unique charm.
Jane Eyre is the representative work of the famous British author Charlotte Bront?. The protagonist, Jane Eyre, is a knowledge-seeking woman who pursues equality and autonomy. The book excels in its poignant portrayal of the struggles of a " Cinderella-like" character, making it a seminal work in women's literature. It is a must-read classic for all women who read novels worldwide, offering countless women spiritual inspiration from Jane Eyre's pursuit of equality and independence.
Mansfield Park (Red and Black in the original title) by the "father of modern novels," Stendhal, uses a delicate and profound pen to depict the social life during the Bourbon restoration period, portraying the typical image of an individual's struggle from the lower classes. The commoner Julien Sorel, with his striking appearance, makes several women succumb to his charm. Red and Black is today recognized as one of the most exquisite art jewels on the crown of European literature and a classic work in the history of world literature that portrays political darkness. In that era, the saying "You cannot succeed in politics without reading Red and Black" circulated, and it was banned in many countries.
My Childhood, My Youth, My University The great Soviet writer and founder of Soviet literature Maxim Gorky once said, "Gorky is the great beacon. He has opened the path for literati worldwide." The trilogy of autobiographical works by the greatest Soviet writer and the founding father of Soviet literature is a milestone in his literary career and a milestone in Russian/Soviet autobiographical novels. These works hold an irreplaceable position in the history of world literature. Lu Xun and Guo Moruo both regarded Gorky as their mentor, as Lu Xun famously said, "Gorky is great—no one can compare to him."
David Copperfield is a monumental work written with great passion by the renowned realist author Charles Dickens, who is hailed as the "king of English novels." As Dickens himself wrote in the preface to the book, "In my heart, there is a child whom I cherish most deeply, and his name is David Copperfield." The book was repeatedly reprinted, bringing wealth and even higher prestige to Dickens.
