Features: Textbook development is a crucial aspect of deepening teaching reform and ensuring teaching quality. To meet the needs of nursing education reform and development in China in the 21st century and to establish a nursing undergraduate textbook system with Chinese characteristics, the Textbook Office of the Ministry of Health organized the revision of the third round of planned nursing textbooks for higher medical colleges across the country. Based on the principles and requirements of the third round of planned textbook revision work from the Fourth Meeting of the Textbook Evaluation Committee for Nursing under the National Association for the Construction of Higher Medical Textbooks, we adopted the training objectives of nursing undergraduates as the basis, with the comprehensive improvement of students' qualities as the core, and the cultivation of students' abilities as the focus. We adhered to the principle of combining ideological, scientific, inspirational, advanced, and applicable aspects in the textbook writing process, selecting and updating the content to reflect the fundamental theories, basic knowledge, and basic skills of this discipline. At the same time, we actively incorporated recent advancements, adding chapters such as "Special Issues and Interventions in Child Development," "Characteristics of Child Health Assessment," "Communication with Children," "Prevention of Accidents," "Assessment of Child Nutritional Status," "Neonatal Intensive Care and Airway Nursing," "Neonatal Gastroesophageal Reflux," "Child Epilepsy," and "Epidemic Encephalitis."
In terms of the writing format, this textbook emphasizes the model of "human-centered, nursing process framework, and nursing diagnosis as the core," integrating the nursing process organically throughout the textbook to reflect the characteristics of the nursing profession. This approach combines theory with practice, enabling students to more comprehensively and systematically grasp the fundamental theories, basic knowledge, and basic skills of pediatric nursing, improve their clinical observation, analysis, judgment, and problem-solving abilities, and apply the nursing process to provide holistic care for nursing recipients, thereby meeting the needs of modern pediatric nursing. Due to the limited length of the textbook, only one disease is selected as a representative for each system, written in full steps according to the nursing process, while the care for other diseases is only elaborated on in terms of common nursing diagnoses and measures. We hope that the revised textbook will better meet the needs of pediatric nursing education and sincerely invite criticism and corrections from colleagues at sister institutions.
