How long does it take for a baby's skull to heal?

Patient's question:

My baby is a premature child, and I was very worried about the child's condition from the beginning. Recently, the child has appeared with this series of conditions, and I am also very worried, afraid that the child will become worse. How long does it take for an infant's cranial bone to heal?

Doctor's answer:

The soft spot of a baby's skull doesn't fully close until the age of 1-1.5 years. If it closes too early or too late, it indicates that the baby may have unhealthy symptoms. So don't hurry; the baby will gradually get better.
This is a relatively well-known cause of torticollis. Its exact cause is unclear, but it is speculated that during the prenatal stage, one side of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck may have suffered compressive injury, leading to the formation of a blood clot. After the clot heals on its own, it forms a hard lump, tightening the muscle and restricting the free movement of the head. Some scholars also suggest that the injury to the sternocleidomastoid muscle may occur during the delivery process.
