How to Check if a Newborn's Jaundice Has Gone Away

Patient's question:

These days, my boss has said that I'm not in good spirits and it's affecting my work performance. Actually, I didn't mean to, either. I often can't sleep at night and sometimes feel anxious and uncomfortable. If it gets worse, I'm worried it might affect my health and work. How can I check if the newborn jaundice has gone away?

Doctor's answer:

Babies who haven't reached their full moon often have jaundice. As long as their palms aren't yellow, it's usually fine. If they still have jaundice at the time of their full moon, you can take them to the hospital to get tested—it's very affordable. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is an indicator of liver function and is often included in physical check-ups. When liver cells become inflamed, damaged, or poisoned, the serum ALT level will rise. This requires regular follow-up tests such as the hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody test, ultrasound, and hepatitis C antibody testing.
