This book is a biographical work about Sartre and his women; but it is not a biography in the usual sense. A typical biographical work focuses on describing the factual life of the subject, emphasizing the collection and organization of materials. This is certainly necessary, but not enough; especially for a subject like Sartre, who has complex thoughts, personality, and experiences. A good biographical work should, on the one hand, fully utilize primary sources, reveal little-known facts, and provide vivid and detailed descriptions; on the other hand, this description should be analytical, even for those who are merely familiar with the subject, and more so with life itself, so that they can gain more beneficial insights.
