Baby jaundice is not getting better after taking medicine, how to treat

Patient's question:

My baby is a premature child, and I was very worried about the child's condition from the beginning. Recently, the child has been experiencing a series of situations, and I am also very worried, afraid that the child will get worse. Please ask how to treat the baby if jaundice does not improve after taking medicine.

Doctor's answer:

Your condition may be physiological jaundice. In mild cases, it appears pale yellow, limited to the face and neck, or may affect the trunk, and the sclera may also turn yellow. It usually subsides within 2 to 3 days and returns to normal skin color by the 5th to 6th day. In severe cases, jaundice can spread from the head to the feet, affecting the entire body, and substances like vomit and cerebrospinal fluid may also turn yellow. The duration can last for more than a week, and in some premature infants, it may persist for up to 4 weeks, with the stool still appearing yellow and no bilirubin in the urine. It is recommended to use blue light therapy, which can be effective.
