Should jaundice be exposed to blue light?

Patient's question:

I don't know what's going on, but my child has been misbehaving and crying non-stop lately. Even the hospital check-up didn't help. Could you please tell me if jaundice needs to be treated with blue light?

Doctor's answer:

Baby jaundice comes in two types: physiological jaundice, which usually resolves on its own. Exposing the baby to sunlight can help.
If the baby develops jaundice within 24 hours of birth, with a severe degree and rapid progression, and if jaundice reappears after it subsides, fever or colds can cause an increase in white blood cells. A bacterial cold is usually the cause, as elevated white blood cell counts can be associated with many illnesses. However, considering the baby has a history of catching a cold, it is more likely to be caused by the cold. Other causes are temporarily ruled out. Standard anti-infection treatment is sufficient.
