Can babies get their ears cleaned?

Patient's question:

The child has only been born a few days, and recently, for some reason, they keep scratching their ears. Can the baby have their ears cleaned?

Doctor's answer:

The baby should often clean the ears like adults do, because there are some things left over from birth in the ears. When cleaning, be very careful and it's best to use an ear spoon with a light to see clearly. My baby once had a hard thing removed from her ear. Moreover, babies get easily upset, and they produce more earwax. If it's not cleaned, it can grow into a large hard lump, and then you'll have to go to the hospital to clean it. Now, my baby loves having her ears cleaned and sits completely still with her tiny eyes squeezed shut, which is quite amusing.
