Old City in the South is the classic work of literary master Lin Haiyin, which has stood alone in the literary world for over thirty years. Since its publication in 1960, it has not only been a bestseller in Taiwan but also has a vast readership in mainland China. With her exquisitely elegant writing style and enchanting prose, Lin Haiyin, through the innocent eyes of the protagonist Yingzi, presents an ancient and beautiful Beijing in her childhood memories.
Recalling Beijing, Lin Haiyin wrote Old City in the South. Lin Haiyin, whose original name was Lin Hanyin and who was known as Yingzi in her childhood, was originally from Miao Li County in Taiwan Province. Her parents had gone to Japan for business, and Lin Haiyin was born in Osaka, Japan, on March 18, 1918. Soon after, she returned to Taiwan under Japanese occupation. Her father, Lin Huanwen, unwilling to live under the iron hooves of the Japanese invaders, moved the family to Beijing, where young Yingzi grew up until 1948, when she returned to Taiwan.
At the age of 19, Lin Haiyin became a reporter for World Daily. At 21, she married editor Xia Chengying (He Fan), which was a major event in the Beijing cultural scene at the time. Lin Haiyin wrote Old City in the South based on her life in Beijing, which was deeply loved by readers. The book was later adapted into a film and illustrated children's comic strips. Lin Haiyin also organized the of United Daily, founded a pure literary publishing house, and edited "He Fan Collection," making significant contributions to selecting literary talent and nurturing writers.
In recent years, Lin Haiyin's health has been fluctuating, suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, and her memory has also declined. Many of her disciples and friends often avoid discussing her illness too much, but whenever she appeared in public in better health, everyone was particularly excited.
