Features: The textbook is divided into four chapters covering phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, and dialects. Each chapter is further divided into several sections, with a set of review and practice questions provided after each section. These exercises help students review and master the main content of the section, as well as guide them to deeper thinking and research. References are listed after each section to assist students in further understanding and mastering the relevant teaching content. Tailored to the characteristics of distance education, the textbook is written in a clear and concise manner to facilitate students' self-study after class. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) has been preliminarily introduced in courses such as "Modern Chinese." This textbook uses IPA for analyzing and explaining phonetic issues and for transcribing examples. It also provides an in-depth introduction to IPA when discussing methods for investigating Chinese dialects. However, since the primary component of IPA teaching involves face-to-face pronunciation and listening exercises, which are difficult to achieve in comprehensive thematic courses and distance learning, this course does not require students to master pronunciation or transcription using IPA.
