Features: The introductory chapter fully outlines the scope of the problems this book aims to address. Here, I need only add one point: to teach advanced courses on the history of British philosophy at Columbia University, I focused on the profound significance of this issue. My in-depth study of the classic British thinkers had long told me that only when one has mastered the philosophy of a British thinker can they hope to appreciate the motivations underlying the work of many thinkers, a figure of equal authority and influence in modern times, namely Sir Isaac Newton.
Regarding the citations in this book, I would like to clarify. Since I am primarily dealing with original materials that have not yet been translated, I am responsible for the translation of the following authors' works: Copernicus (except for his letter to Pope Paul III, which I used the translation by Miss Dorothy Stinnett in her work The Gradual Acceptance of Copernicus's Cosmology); Kepler; Galileo (except for his Dialogue Concerning the Two New Sciences and Discourse and Mathematical Demonstration Concerning Two New Sciences, where I cited the previously mentioned translations); Descartes, whose translated excerpts are all taken from the edition edited by Cousin; Moore's Manual of Metaphysics; Barrow; and Newton, whose translated excerpts are all taken from the edition edited by Hosley.
