A little red on the head, why is there no hair?

Patient's question:

The child is one and a half years old. The hair is quite long, but there are three places where it's a bit red and smooth, with no hair. This has never happened before. Some of them are as big as soybeans.

Doctor's answer:

In your case, it may be alopecia areata, commonly known as "" (literally "ghost-baldness"), which is a sudden, localized, patchy hair loss condition. The affected scalp area is normal without inflammation or any symptoms. The course of this disease is slow, and it can resolve on its own and recur. If all the hair on the entire scalp falls out, you may consider treating it with a decoction of perilla leaves for steam bathing and rubbing the scalp with sliced ginger, taking care not to exceed the point of local heat.
