What should I do if the baby chokes on milk and coughs?

Patient's question:

I don't know what's going on, but my child has been misbehaving lately and crying non-stop. Even the hospital check-up didn't help. What should I do if an infant chokes on milk and coughs?

Doctor's answer:

The esophageal opening and the tracheal opening communicate in the throat. The worst thing about vomiting milk is when the milk flows back from the esophagus to the throat and accidentally enters the trachea during inhalation, which is what we call choking on milk. Persistent dry coughing may be the signal the baby is sending to the parents that something is wrong with their body.
The phenomenon of the baby dry coughing can occur from a few days after birth to several years old. Occasional dry coughing is relatively normal, but if the baby coughs dryly more than four times a day or for a week or two, then parents must be vigilant and it is best to take the child to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment.
