Chronicle of Hardships in Chinese Culture

Author: Guo Shuanglin
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2001-02-01
Features: This book is in dictionary format and includes approximately 2,700 entries, totaling about 1.1 million words. All entries are divided into seven major categories: events, famous cultural cities, historical sites, classic works (periodicals), cultural educational institutions and facilities, arts, and figures. The book is divided into six major historical periods based on the characteristics of Chinese culture in different historical times: Pre-Qin and Han, Three Kingdoms to Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui and Tang to Five Dynasties, Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan, and the Republic of China. The arrangement of entries follows the principle of chronological order after determining the major historical period. Events are arranged by chronological order of occurrence, famous cultural cities by chronological order of destruction, historical sites, cultural educational institutions, and facilities by chronological order of establishment, classic works (periodicals) and arts by chronological order of creation, and figures by chronological order of death. Entries with unclear dates are placed after similar entries in the same category. The book uses simplified characters as specified in the "Total Table of Simplified Characters." When citing names of ancient figures, ancient place names, or names of ancient artifacts, traditional characters are sometimes used to avoid ambiguity. The numbers and units of measurement in the book adhere to the relevant regulations issued by the National Technical Supervision Administration, but some flexibility is occasionally allowed due to the limitations of the content, especially when a large amount of original ancient texts and related materials need to be quoted.
