How many times does a child normally have a bowel movement in a day

Patient's question:

The child has been crying non-stop recently and isn't eating much. How many times a day is it normal for the child to have a bowel movement?

Doctor's answer:

Breastfed infants have yellow or golden-yellow stools, with a uniform consistency like cream or paste. Occasionally, the stools may be slightly thin and greenish, with a sour smell but no odor. They defecate two to four times a day.
Most babies will develop jaundice around three days after birth, which is physiological jaundice. It usually resolves within about 14 days and does not require any treatment. The prognosis is also good.
