Why do babies have jaundice

Patient's question:

These days, my boss said I'm not in good spirits and it's affecting my work performance. Actually, I didn't want to, either. I often can't sleep at night, and sometimes feel anxious and uncomfortable. If it gets worse, I'm worried it will affect my health and work. Why do babies get jaundice?

Doctor's answer:

In your case, it may be physiological jaundice. In mild cases, jaundice appears as a light yellow hue limited to the face and neck, or may extend to the trunk, with sclera also becoming yellowish. It usually subsides within 2 to 3 days and the skin color returns to normal by the 5th to 6th day. In severe cases, jaundice similarly starts from the head and spreads to the feet, affecting the entire body. Vomitus and cerebrospinal fluid may also turn yellow, with the duration lasting more than a week. In some premature infants, it may persist for up to 4 weeks, with the stool still appearing yellow and no bilirubin in the urine. It is recommended to use blue light therapy, which can be effective.
