The Sorrows of Young Werther
At a ball, Werther meets Charlotte and falls in love with her, but she is already engaged. Werther suffers immense pain in his heart and, in despair, takes a position as a junior official at the embassy. Yet he remains unsuccessful and resigns in frustration, returning to Charlotte seeking comfort, only to find she has married. Passionate and sensitive, Werther is unable to attain love and ultimately takes his own life.
Edward and his wife Charlotte live a peaceful life on a country estate, inviting the Captain and Odipli to visit their home. Their arrival gradually divides the household, as the host and female guest, the husband and male guest, develop feelings for each other. They suffer in moral and emotional conflict.
This novel reflects the crisis of bourgeois marriage and portrays the resistance of intellectuals at the time against feudal morality and hierarchical concepts, as well as the demand for individual liberation.
