What is the condition of a baby's crossed eyes

Patient's question:

The baby is 12 months old. Recently, I noticed that the baby seems to have a bit of cross-eyed when looking at things. Is this a problem?

Doctor's answer:

In infants and young children, this phenomenon is often benign pseudossquint, and the reasons are:
1. The visual targets of infants and young children are relatively close. When looking at nearby objects, their gaze tends to focus more, causing both black eyes to move inward and converge.
2. The nasal root area between the eyes of infants and young children is wider. The white part of the eye on the inner side is covered by the skin on the nasal side, so it appears as if both black eyes are positioned on the nasal side of the eye (cross-eyed).
