Is a child tilting their head to watch TV a bad habit or a problem with their eyes?

Patient's question:

Recently, I've noticed that my child always watches TV with their head tilted. Is this a bad habit or is there a problem with their eyes?

Doctor's answer:

The primary eye condition that causes children to develop head tilt while watching TV is monocular esotropia, where the fixating eye is fixed on one side. This is often due to a significant difference in visual acuity between the two eyes, with the better-seeing eye frequently used for fixation, while the poorer-seeing eye becomes esotropic.
It is recommended that when children watch TV, in addition to maintaining a certain distance, they should not sit in the same position every time, especially not directly opposite the TV. Seats should be alternated frequently between the left, center, and right positions.
