Features: This report is the 25th in the annual series, exploring the growth in income productivity necessary for developing countries to eliminate poverty, with the elimination of poverty to be carried out in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner. The core challenge of development is to ensure efficiency in work and to enable nearly 3 billion people with daily incomes of less than two dollars and the additional 2 billion to 3 billion people expected to be added to the world population in the next 30 to 50 years to live a better quality of life. To achieve this goal while protecting our environmental and social assets, we need a global development process more effective than the one followed in the past. It examines the relationships between various conflicting policy objectives—poverty reduction, maintaining growth, improving social choices, and protecting the environment—over a 50-year period. The report points out that many good policies have been identified but have not been adopted or implemented. It tracks this issue to explore the institutional barriers that hinder progress, thereby examining potential institutional innovations that could help overcome these obstacles. This report integrates the findings of previous issues of the World Development Report into a broader and longer-term framework to analyze elements that could be improved in the development process.
