What should I do if my child is scared?

Patient's question:

Just now, around 3 in the morning, we were fast asleep when the child fell from the big bed to the floor and started crying loudly. He was in a prone position. I touched his head, arms, and legs, but he wasn’t crying very hard. I’m wondering if he was scared and that’s why he’s not laughing much now. Will this affect his intelligence? I’m very worried it might impact his IQ. Thank you.
Also, what should I do since he was startled?
Mango Mom

Doctor's answer:

Communicate more with your baby in language, although some babies may not understand the language yet, but moms can tell them not to be afraid, that what just happened was just playing with you, and so on. In most cases, after a baby is startled, if the mother can comfort the baby with a gentle voice while also touching the skin or gently patting the back along the baby's hair, it can give the baby a great sense of security and have the best soothing effect.
