How much milk should a 5-week artificially fed baby normally eat?

Patient's question:

Now the baby is 36 days old. He is fed 130ml of formula milk each time, but he never finishes it. Sometimes he eats 80-90ml, and sometimes a bit more. While eating, he either falls asleep or spits out the nipple. After two hours, he starts crying because he is very hungry. Many parenting books say that formula milk should be fed every three to four hours. So, what should I do? Should I feed him whenever he is hungry, or should I wait exactly three hours?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: For artificially fed fresh milk, add one-third boiling water or thin rice porridge within the first month, gradually reducing to one-third to one-fourth rice porridge, and after one month, generally only one-fourth rice porridge is added. As the baby grows older and their digestive ability strengthens, the amount of rice porridge can be reduced or gradually thickened. If water (about 20-30ml) is added between feedings, infants with strong digestion can switch to full milk after one month. Cow's milk contains less sugar than human milk, so when preparing 100ml of milk, add 5-8 grams of sugar. The total amount of milk in 24 hours is equivalent to one-sixth of the baby's body weight. For a two-month-old baby weighing 6kg, it is approximately 800-900ml, fed every 3-4 hours, with each feeding being about 130-150ml. Add 20-30ml of plain water between two milk feedings.
