Features: "A perfect book," the Roman poet Horace said, "is one that is both educational and entertaining, avoiding overly novel, stale, or lengthy—about a foot and a half—words, with language as concise and clear as possible. The language should be direct and penetrate the heart. Cut out unnecessary words." Horace advised, "Let your work conform to the judgment of an able critic, and be careful with your friends." I wrote my book following the poet's advice. But I must admit, I don't entirely agree with the poet's last piece of advice. Because while writing, I consulted many able critics, both laypeople and experts. And I also didn't cultivate a sense of caution toward my friends—that was a wise decision, because my friends, like many others, inspired me and encouraged me. Children are not born as blank slates; they come to us with hidden preferences, biases, strengths, and weaknesses. Just as parents cannot subjectively decide a child's gender or eye color. This book provides an engaging and scientific method to test the influence of innate factors—the role of environment and the impact of parents on child development. This book offers the first scientific test. Parents who believe they have little influence on their children's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and thus withdraw may find both surprise and relief in David Cohen, a psychologist, unique explanation of the importance and limitations of innate traits."
