Patient's question:
My baby is almost six months old now. A few days ago, she had a slight cold with symptoms like a runny nose and eye discharge, but no fever. I gave her a little children's cold medicine, and the symptoms have persisted for more than a week. Now she doesn't run her nose as much, but the eye discharge is still there, and it's very severe after waking up—her eyes are even hard to open. Even after wiping, it keeps coming back. Is there any good solution? Also, when the wind blows, her eyes start tearing, and the discharge is very sticky. When it dries, it becomes eye discharge. Is it because the child has "internal heat"? Since the heating has just started, I've given her boiled water, but it hasn't improved. Will this continue to affect her eye development?
Doctor's answer:
Hello:We recommend adding a milk companion to the baby's formula or lukewarm boiled water to effectively alleviate the baby's "upfire" condition. Drink more lukewarm boiled water between feedings.
Eye care: You can use a piece of fat-free disinfectant cotton ball or gauze dipped in a small amount of physiological saline or lukewarm boiled water to wipe from the inside of the baby's eye outward. Do not reuse the same cotton ball after wiping once; discard it after each use. If the condition does not improve after three days, or if the baby's eye discharge is purulent, it may indicate an eye inflammation, and you should take the baby to the hospital for a checkup.
