What is temporary fainting?

Patient's question:

My child is three years old. Recently, he had a fever of 38.7 degrees Celsius. He was playing well when suddenly his eyes became straight, and his body became limp, losing consciousness. After being treated with oxygen and fever-reducing injections at the hospital, he recovered. But I don’t know what caused it. When he was two and a half to two and seven months old, while sitting on a stool watching cartoons, he suddenly fell to the ground and lost consciousness. There were no symptoms of fever or discomfort beforehand. In half a year, this happened twice in a row, causing great worry for the adults. I don’t know the reason and would appreciate your advice!

Doctor's answer:

Hello: Based on the situation you described, your child's condition should be considered a symptom of high fever seizures. Family care for high fever seizures:
1. Handling during an episode:
(1) Acupressure or thumb massage: Renzhong (GV26), Baihui (GV20), Hegu (LI4), Shenmen (HT7).
(2) Active cooling, while ensuring ventilation and warmth by loosening clothing. Use alcohol or lukewarm water to bathe the neck, armpits, and groin.
(3) Loosen the collar to keep the airway clear. Lie the child on their side to prevent vomiting or secretions from being inhaled. If the child's jaw is not yet clenched, place a folded handkerchief or cloth strip, or a spoon handle wrapped in cloth, between their teeth to prevent tongue biting.
(4) Administer antipyretics and anticonvulsants (e.g., phenobarbital).
(5) After simple emergency treatment, immediately take the child to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment.
2. For cases of recurrent seizures or children with a family history of high fever seizures, administer antipyretics and anticonvulsants at the onset of fever or during vaccinations to prevent episodes. For some high fever seizure patients, medication should be continued for 2–3 years or until the child is 4–6 years old.
