The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes was compiled in 1894 when Doyle was 35, including 11 short stories. In The Final Problem (1893), Doyle killed off Holmes, causing an uproar among readers. Over 20,000 subscribers canceled their orders for the serialized stories in The Strand Magazine, and even his mother protested. In 1901, at 42, Doyle had not written any Holmes stories for eight years but made a comeback with his third long novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, once again winning the hearts of readers. The Valley of Fear was his fourth long novel, completed in 1915 when he was 56. The Final Adventure, compiled in 1917 when he was 58, includes 8 short stories. His Last Bow, his final work, consists of 12 short stories and was published in 1927 when he was 68. After this series of works were released, organizations similar to the Sherlock Holmes Society emerged across Europe and the United States, forming a religious-like fervor of adoration for Holmes. The works were also translated into multiple languages, including Inuktitut and Esperanto.
