It should be specially emphasized that in addition to appropriately revising the book according to the changes in postgraduate entrance exam formats, we have also added many new contents to better meet the review needs of readers.
First, unique word list division. If you are going to memorize, memorize what you don’t know. The uniqueness of this word list lies in the fact that we have designed highly targeted classified word lists based on the actual needs of readers, adhering to the principles of saving candidates’ time and energy and improving learning efficiency. This truly allows readers to pinpoint their weaknesses and gaps, memorizing words more efficiently and effectively.
·Polysemy of familiar words. You may often encounter situations while reading where you recognize all the words but still can’t understand the entire sentence. One reason is that you haven’t fully grasped the multiple meanings of words, turning familiar words into unfamiliar ones, which affects reading speed and quality. In recent years’ postgraduate entrance exam papers, the setters have clearly strengthened the focus on this aspect, and many candidates have been severely affected. Especially in reading and translation sections, misunderstanding the meaning of a single word can lead to significant score loss. In light of this, we have focused on solving readers’ learning difficulties, spending a lot of time and effort selecting all instances of polysemy from the syllabus for readers to study, helping them overcome the pitfalls of familiar words. This section on polysemy of familiar words is listed separately within each unit.
·Vocabulary gap between CET-4/6 and postgraduate entrance exams. Is the vocabulary for CET-4/6 the same as that for postgraduate entrance exams? If not, what are the differences between them? The compilers of this book have shown great ingenuity by specifically identifying the vocabulary gap between the CET-4/6 syllabus and the postgraduate entrance exam syllabus, forming this vocabulary gap list. When memorizing words, start with the ones you don’t know. Readers should target this section of vocabulary for focused memorization, using the CET-4/6 ladder to quickly reach the peak of postgraduate entrance exams! This section of vocabulary gap is marked with a ▲ in the book.
·Vocabulary beyond the syllabus. The syllabus requires that 3% of the exam paper include words beyond the syllabus. Based on past experience and an understanding of the direction of postgraduate entrance exam setting, we have carefully selected the vocabulary beyond the syllabus from the latest English and American periodicals with themes similar to recent exam papers, with the hope that the 3% of words beyond the syllabus in the exam will not exceed those in this book. This way, candidates not only memorize more effectively but also memorize comprehensively, truly outperforming others in vocabulary. Familiarity with this section will not only allow for smooth reading of the content but also enable direct answers to questions that purely test vocabulary meanings. This section of vocabulary beyond the syllabus is marked with an in the book.
Second, carefully selected complex sentences—memorize while reading, ensuring both vocabulary and reading are improved. Vocabulary is the foundation, and reading comprehension is the key. Apart from unfamiliar words, complex sentences are the biggest challenge for candidates in reading. To address this, this book selects complex sentences from past postgraduate entrance exam papers and the latest English and American periodicals. These complex example sentences not only deepen readers’ understanding and memorization of words in context but also improve reading and translation skills. Memorize while reading, read while memorizing, ensuring both vocabulary and reading are improved.
Third, accompanied by synchronized audio tapes—memorize while listening, improving reading and listening skills simultaneously. The syllabus requires that listening tests be conducted in the future, pushing those with "deaf-mute English" skills to the brink. What to do? Practice more listening and speaking! To this end, we have recorded audio tapes with words read by English and American experts, creating an opportunity for candidates to practice listening while memorizing words. At the same time, psychological research shows that combining listening and reading can enhance memory effectiveness. Therefore, using this book is a win-win: memorize words while practicing listening, and practice listening while memorizing words.
One more point to note is that helping readers memorize quickly is the greatest feature of this book. In this revision, while retaining the essence of the original version, we have enriched and developed its content, making the book even more perfect.
