Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: Right eye retinal disease of the umbilical cord, vision 0.06, strabismus, can it be cured?
History of previous diagnosis and treatment, as well as effectiveness: None

Doctor's answer:

Strabismus has two types: one is paralytic strabismus, primarily caused by injuries to the brain due to trauma, bacteria, viruses, etc. (often occurring in the posterior part of the brain), or the development of tumors in the brain. This type is uncommon. Now, let's focus on the first type of paralytic strabismus, which has two manifestations: one is esotropia (also known as cross-eyed or squinting), and the other is exotropia, where one eye deviates outward. The most common cause is refractive error.
Esotropia is often caused by hyperopia and typically begins around the ages of two or three. Individuals with high hyperopia need to exert more effort to focus on nearby objects, which also strengthens the convergence of both eyes toward the center. Over time, this can lead to esotropia.
Exotropia is commonly caused by high myopia. It usually starts around the ages of seven or eight. Due to high myopia, when reading or doing tasks, the object is placed close to the eyes, making it difficult for both eyes to align closely and accurately. As a result, one eye is favored over the other. With less frequent use, the vision in the favored eye gradually deteriorates, and the eye continues to deviate outward over time, eventually becoming exotropia.
The earlier the treatment begins, the better. For children, it is especially important to seek immediate medical evaluation and wear appropriate glasses. This can help gradually realign the eye, but it must be done under the guidance of an ophthalmologist. If strabismus cannot be corrected with glasses or exercises, surgery may be an option.
