What happens when you have Horner's syndrome?

Patient's question:

The child is one year old, with one eye having a constricted pupil, drooping eyelid, and no sweating on the same side of the face.

Doctor's answer:

1. Unilateral miosis (pupil constriction), eyelid ptosis (narrow palpebral fissure), and enophthalmos are the three characteristic symptoms of this disease.
  2. The nictitating membrane can be seen to be lax and prolapsed. Sometimes, it covers half of the eye in a fixed position.
  3. The ability to close the eyelids and the pupillary light reflex are still maintained, but if the eyelids do not close completely, corneal dryness may occur.
  4. The upper eyelids of affected cats are raised, and it is difficult for them to open their eyes. Due to eyelid ptosis, inversion may occur, leading to persistent tearing. The dilation of conjunctival vessels is uncertain.
  5. The condition occurs over time, often manifesting in the afternoon or early morning. Alcohol or nitroglycerin can trigger headache attacks. The headache is often localized to the same side.
