How to treat strabismus

Patient's question:

There is a squint in one eye. The doctor said it needs surgery. Is there any other treatment method?

Doctor's answer:

Strabismus affects binocular visual function, and severe cases may lack good stereoscopic vision. Stereoscopic vision is a high-level visual function possessed only by humans and higher animals, and it is one of the prerequisites for performing fine tasks. Without good stereoscopic vision, there will be significant limitations in learning and employment. Most strabismus patients also suffer from amblyopia. Due to prolonged monocular fixation in strabismus patients, the other eye may experience disuse atrophy or arrested development, resulting in poor vision that cannot be corrected to normal even with appropriate glasses later. Treatment for strabismus is recommended through surgery. If the cause is known, it should be removed.
