Patient's question:
I don't know what's going on, but my child has been misbehaving lately and crying non-stop. Even the hospital check-up didn't help. I'm wondering if hand, foot, and mouth disease is serious—should I give medicine or get an injection?Doctor's answer:
For acute-phase symptoms such as low-grade fever or no fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat, or poor appetite and nausea, the "Yinqiao Powder" formula can be used; for persistent high fever, dense distribution of blisters on the mouth, hands, feet, buttocks, and limbs, the "Qingwen Baiedu Yin" formula can be used; for complications such as high fever that does not subside and frequent coughing with shortness of breath, the "Jizhao Lianhuang Wan combined with Shenfu Tang" formula can be used.During the recovery phase of the illness, for children with dry mouth and sore throat, Shachen Maidong Tang can be used with Shengdihuang (fresh rehmannia root) and Lugen (coptis rhizome) to nourish yin and generate fluids, clear heat, and moisten the throat. If blisters appear in the child's mouth, one of the following can be chosen to apply to the affected area: Xigua Shuang (watermelon frost), Bingbeng San (ice borax powder), or Xili San (tin powder). For severe blisters on the hands and feet, one of the following can be used, mixed with sesame oil and applied to the affected area: Ruyijinhuang San (happy golden powder) or Qingdai San (indigo powder).
