Patient's question:
17 days since onset, right palm and wrist red and swollenDoctor's answer:
Early treatment can include heat application, physiotherapy, and the use of sulfonamide drugs or antibiotics. If there is pus, a longitudinal incision can be made along the nail fold for drainage. When the infection has spread to the subcutaneous tissue around the base of the finger nail, longitudinal incisions can be made on both sides of the nail fold. The epithelial tissue at the nail root can be lifted, and the nail root can be removed. A small piece of petroleum jelly gauze or a latex sheet can be used for drainage. If there is pus accumulation under the nail bed, the nail should be removed or the nail over the abscess cavity should be trimmed. When removing the nail, care should be taken to avoid damaging the nail bed to prevent deformities in the newly formed nail later.
