What are the symptoms of strabismus?

Patient's question:

I suspect my child has strabismus. What are the symptoms of strabismus?

Doctor's answer:

The symptoms of strabismus can generally be divided into:
1. Eye drifting upward.
2. Eye tremor, such as congenital esotropia.
3. Strabismus-related torticollis.
4. Diplopia, such as paralytic strabismus or acute convergent strabismus.
5. Strabismus can lead to amblyopia, but those who can alternate vision are less likely to develop amblyopia.
6. Preferring to close one eye in sunlight to avoid diplopia.
7. Upper eyelid drooping, such as true or false upper eyelid drooping that may accompany vertical strabismus.
8. Deviation of eye position. Sometimes parents may not notice it, but others around them might. Conversely, some parents may mistake pseudoesotropia for true esotropia.
