Can epilepsy be cured with traditional Chinese medicine?

Patient's question:

Teacher, hello, I am Shu Yuanyuan, a student from Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the 13th grade. I would like to consult you about the TCM treatment for epilepsy. My cousin has a history of epilepsy for ten years, with the onset at the age of two. Please guide me, thank you.

Doctor's answer:

Currently, the main treatments for epilepsy primarily fall into two categories: one is drug therapy, which is the preferred treatment for epilepsy at present; the other is surgical therapy, which is suitable for refractory and intractable epilepsy that is ineffective with drug therapy, as well as some secondary epilepsy that is suitable for surgery. However, this therapy carries certain risks, so it is generally not used as the first-line treatment. There are also some auxiliary therapies, such as acupuncture, implantation, medication implantation, and external treatment devices, but these can currently only serve as supplementary therapies.
