About five years ago, when the author, under the guidance of his supervisor, Professor Huang Shijian, determined "Early Qing Scholars and Western Learning" as the research topic, Master Huang repeatedly advised me to dig for materials from a large amount of primary literature and to draw objective conclusions diligently and carefully. However, as the collection and research of historical materials progressed, the author found that the scope of this topic was too broad, and it was obviously difficult to examine it comprehensively within the limited time.
