How to treat otitis media with effusion in children

Patient's question:

Due to a cold, I developed otitis media in one ear with fluid in the eardrum, which has been ongoing for over two months.

Doctor's answer:

Consider otitis media with effusion, and drain the middle ear fluid. Improve ventilation and drainage of the middle ear. Common treatments include myringotomy, tympanostomy tubes, maintaining nasal and eustachian tube patency, and eustachian tube dilation. Actively treat nasal or pharyngeal diseases such as adenoidectomy, septoplasty, inferior turbinate surgery, and polypectomy. If the tonsils are particularly large and are associated with recurrent otitis media with effusion, tonsillectomy should be performed. Antibiotics or synthetic antimicrobial drugs can be used during acute phase. Oral corticosteroids can be used for short-term treatment.
