The Aisin Gioro family is an important branch of the Jurchen people. The outstanding Jurchen leader Nurhaci and his son Hong Taiji founded the Later Jin and Qing dynasties. Nurhaci claimed the surname Aisin Gioro, becoming the progenitor of the name. During the Later Jin and Qing dynasties, Aisin Gioro was one of China's most prominent surnames. Due to the transition of dynasties, some members of the Aisin Gioro family changed their surname to Jin, while others adopted (Tong) or (Tong).
