What should I do if the child can't fall asleep by themselves?

Patient's question:

A 6-month-old baby cannot lift their head, can roll over, has a normal appetite, and shows no significant abnormalities, but sometimes they shake. How can I help the child fall asleep on their own?

Doctor's answer:

The child might have had a nightmare, might not like the dark, might not like not seeing you, or might not like being alone. If the child is afraid, ask him how he can overcome his fear. Together, come up with a solution.
If he's afraid of the dark, add a night light. If he's afraid of being alone, leave the door slightly ajar, or give him a favorite small animal toy. Alternatively, tell him that Mom will check on him every fifteen minutes so he knows Mom is nearby and hasn't left.
For children afraid of monsters, give them a weapon to protect themselves and drive away the monsters. For example, place a fan on the bedside table and label it "Monster Repeller." When a monster appears, a swish of the fan can scare it away.
