How to identify if a child has roundworms, how old can a child be to take roundworm medicine

Patient's question:

I am 36 years old this year, and recently I have been feeling unwell. Sometimes during the day, I feel dizzy, and it has also affected my work. I can't sleep at night, and the medicine I took doesn't seem to work well. How can I tell if my child has roundworms, and at what age can they be treated for roundworms?

Doctor's answer:

To determine if there are parasites in the stomach, you can make a preliminary judgment based on the following abnormal symptoms:
1. The child frequently complains of stomach pain, especially around the navel area, which can be relieved by rubbing.
2. The child easily wakes up at night, grinds their teeth, and drools.
3. On the child’s face and neck skin, there are often pale, round or oval patches with fine, grayish-white scales, commonly known as "worm spots."
4. Without a clear reason, the child’s skin frequently develops "hives," or urticaria.
5. The child shows picky eating habits and has a strange craving for things like soil, paper, or cloth.
6. The child eats a lot but is always hungry, loves snacks, and doesn’t gain weight despite eating more.
7. When the tongue is extended, there are scattered, round, neatly edged red papules on the surface.
8. When the lower lip is pulled down, small, pinhead-sized grayish-white particles can be seen near the gum line.
9. The child has poor concentration when looking at things.
If you notice any of the above symptoms in your child, suspect that they may have parasites in their stomach. You can confirm this by checking their stool for eggs at the hospital. If eggs are found, it’s necessary to undergo deworming treatment.
