How to handle water in a baby's ear

Patient's question:

The child was born only a few days ago, and recently, for some reason, they have been scratching their ears frequently. How should I handle water getting into an infant's ears?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, when water enters a baby's ear, immediately tilt the baby's head toward the side where the water entered and gently use a (stick) to absorb the water and dry it thoroughly. Cotton swabs can usually only clean the outer part of the ear. Be careful and gentle when performing these actions to avoid damaging the eardrum. If water gets into the ear during a bath, in most cases, it will drain out on its own. If there is water accumulation in the inner ear, seek medical attention immediately for specialized treatment. If there is excessive or large earwax, it should be handled by a doctor.
