Features: Huazhen was a versatile painter whose landscape paintings exhibited a wide variety of styles and themes. He mastered intricate, bold, ink wash, blue-green, boneless, Midian, Southern, and Northern schools, among others. These diverse painting techniques alternated in his creative periods, following no discernible pattern. This may have been related to his professional identity as a painter, who was compelled to adapt to the aesthetic tastes and needs of different patrons. As a result, summarizing the origins and evolutionary trajectory of his landscape paintings is an extremely challenging task. The contemporary Yang Wuyang once said, "Huaxinluo drew inspiration from Shitao and was influenced by Nantian, as both Shitao and Nantian were students of Shanqiao. Nantian embodied elegance, while Shitao conveyed depth. Xinluo did not merely imitate their styles but created his own, absorbing the strengths of both, ultimately returning to Shanqiao's legacy." Similarly to his landscape paintings, Huazhen's figure paintings covered a broad range of themes, including historical stories, literati, and folk customs. In terms of technique, his works also displayed diverse styles, making it difficult to trace their developmental trajectory. Huazhen had a special interest in the theme of high-minded scholars, with scenes of literary gatherings, recluses, and leisurely retreats recurring in his paintings. Interestingly, the theme of playful village children in a village school, which later orthodox painters criticized as "rustic" or "vulgar," was also repeatedly depicted. These works often portrayed the scene of children frolicking while their teacher napped in the summer village school. Here, the scholar, portrayed as a pedantic figure, becomes the subject of ridicule and jest. Perhaps, in this, Huazhen sought to express self-mockery for his life of hardship dedicated to poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Snow on the Tianshan Mountains is a representative work of Huazhen's figure paintings, created when he was 74 years old. The figures in the foreground are dressed in vivid scarlet, rendered in bold and striking tones, creating a strong contrast with the snowy landscape. The scene is vast, profound, clear, and pure, exuding a powerful artistic impact. In his youth, Huazhen embarked on extensive travels in the northern frontier, leaving an indelible impression on him of the boundless expanse of the cold wilderness. It is evident that the later Ren Bo'nan drew profound inspiration from Huazhen's works of this kind.
