In the year 439 AD, the Toba people of the Xianbei ethnic group, under Emperor Taiwu, unified the northern regions. The cessation of warfare and the integration of ethnic groups promoted economic and social development, leading to a cultural revival. Influenced by the nomadic culture of the northern regions, the calligraphy formed a unique style characterized by boldness, roughness, and unrestrained exuberance. This distinctive style emerged during the four decades after Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital to Luoyang. It was a period when clerical script was gradually transforming into regular script, and various styles and schools were emerging, paving the way for the calligraphy of the following two dynasties. The numerous steles and inscriptions unearthed in Luoyang and Shandong over the years serve as evidence.
There are four types of Wei Stele calligraphy. The calligraphic techniques of Wei Steles often feature large, dramatic strokes and lack meticulous. The structure is arranged arbitrarily while adhering to the principle of the character's center of gravity. As a result, many works resemble disheveled, unadorned clothing, forming a rustic and natural beauty. Unlike the strict and meticulously carved Tang Steles, Wei Steles are more difficult for learners to grasp.
