When does the child's skull close?

Patient's question:

When will a child's brain cavity close, that is, close?

Doctor's answer:

The size of the anterior fontanelle is closely related to brain development. Microcephaly and the anterior fontanelle shrinking close to closure can occur due to brain developmental abnormalities. Microcephaly can be caused by factors such as chromosomal abnormalities, metabolic diseases, intrauterine infections, and intrauterine malnutrition. By the fifth month of pregnancy, brain development in the fetus has already shown delays. At birth, the head circumference is slightly smaller than that of a normal newborn, with a small or nearly closed anterior fontanelle. As the child grows older, the facial bones develop normally, while the frontal bone and both temporal bones tilt upward, the occipital bone is flat, making the head appear smaller, the top of the head more pointed, hence it is also known as oxycephaly.
