Patient's question:
AgeDetailed medical condition and purpose of consultation: Facial nerve palsy
Duration of this episode: One week
Other: What are some good methods
Doctor's answer:
Hello: Corticosteroid hormones such as prednisone may be effective when used continuously for 1 to 2 weeks within 2 days of symptom onset. However, whether this can alleviate pain and promote recovery remains inconclusive. If the eyelids cannot close, lubricating eye drops or eye patches can be used every few hours to protect the eyes. Massage of the paralyzed facial muscles may help with recovery. If facial paralysis persists for 6 to 12 months or longer, surgical options such as transplanting a healthy nerve (often the hypoglossal nerve) to the paralyzed facial muscles can be considered.
