Why doesn't the baby sleep?

Patient's question:

My daughter is now three and a half months old. She doesn't sleep well during the day or at night, twisting and turning in bed, her head shifting from one side to the other. What could be the reason for this? Additional question: Also, every night around 3 or 4 a.m., her body jerks. Otherwise, she is fine—she eats well and loves to laugh.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, crying can be divided into two situations: one is physiological crying. This is an instinctive response and a way for babies to express their emotions and needs. It may be caused by hunger, temperature changes, being startled, or having nightmares. In this case, parents only need to calmly comfort the baby to help it regain calm.
The other type of crying is pathological crying, which should be taken seriously. Any illness that causes pain, itching, or discomfort in the baby can lead to restlessness and crying. Examples include fever, eczema, rickets, oral herpes, pinworm infection, and intussusception. When a baby cries at night without a clear reason, parents should first consider physiological causes and then explore pathological factors. If necessary, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.
