How to Cough a Child

Patient's question:

Daughter is 38 months old and has been coughing continuously for 2 months. The coughing is intermittent, worsening with physical activity. Initially, she took traditional Chinese medicine cough tablets, which had no effect. Later, she saw a Western doctor who prescribed many antibiotics like cephalosporins, but the cough did not improve after a few days. The child has no other adverse reactions, and the doctor said there are no issues with her throat or lungs—just the cough. I really don’t know what to do, especially at night when she coughs before bed and continues to cough 1–2 times after falling asleep. Please advise the experts.

Doctor's answer:

Multiple factors such as overheating, dry air, temperature fluctuations, food irritation, internal heat due to lung and stomach deficiency, heatiness, early colds, throat inflammation, lung inflammation, and more can cause dry cough. A doctor needs to assess the condition by examining the spirit, complexion, throat, skin temperature, lung sounds, and other factors to determine the cause and prescribe medication.
At home, avoid excessively high temperatures, drink plenty of water, and prevent abrupt temperature changes. Consult experienced elders for advice.
Additionally, ensure the baby receives comprehensive nutrition to boost their immunity. Besides breast milk and formula, you can try giving the baby colostrum, such as LifeSun Colostrum. It contains five types of immunoglobulins that can bind to pathogens and toxins, forming antibodies. It also promotes the development and maturation of the newborn's immune system, protecting them from infections and enhancing immunity.
